Dan Englund, Norge Ski Club 2008 King of the Hill

Dan Englund took the crown as Norge Ski Club's 2008 King of the Hill in a close and thrilling competition. The King of the Hill Competition consisted of three rounds of jumping. Each round consisted of two jumps, which were then totaled for points (1 Meter = 1 point). If a contestant fell or touched the ground with any part of there body, they received no points for that jump. There were 13 jumpers starting in the first round, which was then cut to the top 7 for the second round. The third and final round consisted of the four top point earners.

Daniel Englund was King of the Hill after the first round, allowing him to sit out the second round of jumping. The third round saw two falls as Mike Fury and Will Schott were battling for the first three positions. As Mike Fury fell on the first jump and was unable to continue because of an equipment failure, this ceded the third position to Will Schott. Zak Hammill and Dan Englund were left to battle it out for first. Dan just edged out Zak by one-half meter when the dust had settled.

The 4th annual King of the Hill Tournament was held Saturday June 14th. The Norge Ski Club teamed up with the Cary Grove Food Pantry to make this years King of the Hill Ski Jump Tournament a Jump Off for Charity. Admission was 5.00 of non parishable food items. The Norge Ski Club thanks all those who attended and contributed to this great event.

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Norge Ski Club was established on November 12, 1905. Since then, there have been many exciting events. Twice, the Norge Ski Club erected a jump and demonstrated ski jumping to a full house at Soldier Field. At another time, the club demonstrated the sport at Wrigley Field!

Norge members have jumped for The Wide World of Sports, and five Norge Ski Jumping members are in the Ski Jumping Hall of Fame.

The Norge Ski Club is a volunteer organization. There are no paid members of the club. We built our jumps with volunteer work. Events like this are the way we raise funds to continue to exist. We generally have crowds of thousands of people at our events to watch jumpers from across the country and around the world to compete. The jumpers like to compete at Norge because we have the best crowds.

Hello all,

During the non-winter months, the skiers train at Norge Ski Club by jumping off of plastic and ceramic jumps and landing on plastic mats. This allows the Norge ski jumpers to train all year round. We have a combination of some of the best training facilities and coaches in the country. This allowed a Jumper from the Norge Ski Club to win last years USSA SuperTour. The SuperTour is a contest that lasts all year where jumpers accumulate points at each event. Competitions are held all across the country including the Norge Ski Club. The USA's best jumpers compete for the USSA SuperTour title.

Over all, 3 Norge Jumpers placed in the Top 10 of the SuperTour. This will give them special training privileges at the training center in Lake Placid, NY.

On Sunday we will be holding our tournament on traditional snow. We will have a 9'x12' TV screen showing the statistics and players of the tournament. NO NFL GAMES ON JANUARY 27TH.

Last years snowing of the 70 Meter Tower

Norge members finishing the snowing of the tower
Many years ago, norge members had to carry snow up onto the tower by creating long lines of volunteers. In these long lines, people would pass a bag of snow to the next person in the line until the bag of snow made it all of the way to the top. All of the snow on the tower was carried by hand and packed in place by hand on the tower. It took twenty to fifty people many hours to carry the snow onto the tower by hands, arms, legs and backs. I can tell you, that was a big workout for those who showed up. Everybody left tired when the snow was properly installed.

Now, in this high tech world that we live in, we still do it the same way. Some things just don't change and maybe the more than 100 years that our club has been around has left our club with a die hard tradition. We call it "snowing the tower" and all Norge members should show up to this social event.

Here are some movies of the work. Moving Snow, Filling the bags of snow, Getting bags of snow onto the tower, Finishing Just before 11:00PM on Wednesday night.

Follow this link http://www.pbase.com/colorchange/norge_2008 to see photos taken at the event. I ran into the photographer with a huge telephoto lens taking 10 shots per second. I asked him to email a link, and this was whet he sent.

"Anyone can download the low resolution pictures from my website. If someone wants a high resolution shot, just send me an e-mail.

Best regards,

Timothy J. Homola"

(His email will be provided upon request. Note to jumpers and coaches: You really need to see these pictures.)
